Air Pollution from Outdated Boilers and Heaters at U.S. Chemical Plants

The U.S. chemical manufacturing industry is one of the leading sources of greenhouse gases and health-harming air pollution in the U.S. With thousands of plants currently operating, and more proposed or under construction, the industry’s pollution footprint continues to expand. The Environmental Integrity Project examined emissions from stationary combustion sources, like boilers, heaters, and furnaces, at the 20 plants that reported emitting the most greenhouse gases from these high-emitting sources. Replacing or upgrading outdated heaters, boilers, and furnaces at these plants with low- or zero-emission technologies could help reduce emissions and negative impacts on workers and downwind communities.
