Pollution from Outdated Industrial Boilers and Heaters in Illinois

The Environmental Integrity Project examined 35 industrial plants in Illinois and found that 89 percent of them (31 total) had at least one outdated heater or boiler. The facilities included oil refineries, chemical plants, food and beverage factories, and a paper mill. In 2023, these 35 facilities reported releasing 19,045,904 metric tons of greenhouse gases and 40,180 tons of health-damaging “criteria” air pollutants (including nitrogen oxides and particulate matter) from heaters and boilers.
